The 12th running of the Aiken Fall Steeplechase occurs Saturday at Ford Conger Field. Gates open 9:30 am with first race at 1 pm. Tickets 10 dollars day of sale, 8 in advance. Railside parking costs 75 to 150 dollars with infield 5 dollars.
Ron Kaylor of Aiken drove in the Stoney Roberts Demolition Derby at the Western Carolina State Fair. He has long been a derby fan but this was only his third entry, enjoying the chance to tear a car apart after weeks spent rebuilding it. Four cars started at Bridgestone Arena and battered until one remained.
Aiken Planning Commission approved a plan to demolish the Dillard’s building at Whiskey Road and Pine Log Road to make way for a 70,000 square foot Kroger. The store will include a gas station and drive through pharmacy with expanded departments and a brick exterior. Operational date eyed for early 2005. City Council to address concept plan October 27.
City leaders in Aiken see Hitchcock Plaza as ripe for redevelopment as Kroger moves into a 45,000 square foot space. Officials discuss reconfiguring big boxes, adding out parcels, and boosting the center while noting parking changes over 20 years. See PLAZA, page 10A.
The 2002 reform lets South Carolina municipalities halt elections when no competitive races or write in candidates appear within two weeks. Aiken City Council races were unopposed, saving about 4000 dollars. Burnettown Monetta and Perry expect similar savings. Critics call the measure unconstitutional and say it strips write in candidates of a chance to run.
