A bill to raise the minimum wage for nearly five million workers to 2.65 an hour on January 1 with gradual increases over four years won final congressional approval Thursday by a 236 to 187 vote and awaits President Carter's signature.
A government panel will meet November 16 to decide if marijuana should be moved to a less restrictive drug class and allowed as a prescription drug for certain cancer and glaucoma patients. The advisory committee would consider reclassifying marijuana from a heroin and LSD group to one with cocaine and morphine, enabling physicians to prescribe it.
In Columbia AP reports South Carolina ranks among the top ten states for road deaths per mile traveled. R P Smith Jr notes 99 more fatalities year to date versus last year, a 15 percent rise while miles driven rose 3 percent. The mileage death rate up 4.2 percent, higher than all but seven states, with two tied. The national rate stands at 3.2 percent.
