American sweep of Nobel Prizes includes Saul Bellow awarded Literature for human understanding and subtle analysis of contemporary culture. Bellow, 61, born in Canada to Russian Jewish parents and raised in Chicago, receives the prize.
Disaster crews used four giant cranes through the night to hoist a commuter ferry that capsized 200 yards offshore in the Mississippi River after a collision with the tanker Frosta. Authorities reported 22 bodies recovered and as many as 60 more feared dead, with victims still in cars or buried in river mud. The 120 by 55 foot ferry lay upside down, hull exposed, after the crash.
Jimmy Carter and President Ford head to the Al Smith dinner in New York City. Their schedules are timed to avoid a meeting with each other as Ford arrives at 7 p.m. and leaves at 8 30 p.m. Carter comes at 9 p.m. and stays about an hour.
Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith warned that his delegation may walk out of pre conference talks in Geneva if black nationalist demands undermine the concept that brought them to the negotiations. He spoke at an airport news conference arriving for discussions with nationalist leaders before next week’s conference.
