The Aiken County Council approves a resolution requesting Gov. James B. Edwards and the attorney general investigate Chairman Harold V. Graybeal for malfeasance. Councilmen cite hostile attacks and a critical Aiken Standard story, while Graybeal responds with a four page defense.
Aiken Standard experienced press mechanical issues that halted yesterday's edition. Some papers were delivered late, with readers receiving both yesterday's and today's issues today as press workers continued repairs into the morning.
In Luling Louisiana a cargo ship struck a fully loaded Mississippi River ferry. The ferry carried about 20 cars and an unknown number of occupants plus roughly 50 walk-on passengers. Four bodies were found and a sister ferry rescued several people from swift water. The exact toll remains uncertain.
President Ford will hold a White House news conference at 2 p.m. EDT as he nears a final debate with Jimmy Carter. The announcement came from Deputy Press Secretary John Carlson on a day with no afternoon commitments and follows Ford’s last national briefing six days earlier at the Executive Office Building.
After over an inch of rain today the Aiken area expects sunny skies and warmer temperatures tomorrow. Rain chances fall below 20 percent tonight with a mid 60s high and mid 40s low. Weekend looks mild though a brief cold snap may arrive Friday.
The Aiken Standard will publish a two page map showing new county council districts to help voters locate their district. Voters cannot vote for all council candidates. only the chairman race is at large between Carroll W. Warner and Charles W. Prosser.
Aiken County Sheriff announces William Gary Collins of Graniteville charged with the 4 year old murder of Julie Widgeon at Ludlow Lake. The weapon has been found after 14 hours of ballistic tests. Collins also faces assault and battery with intent to kill for wounding Widgeon’s friend.
Aiken County Council voted 4 to 3 in a closed session to appoint L C Greene as temporary administrator. This marks the second time Greene has held the top post, replacing John B Roberts who was left as acting administrator after the resignation of Thomas F Williams. Roberts had been approached by three council members regarding the interim role.
Democratic incumbent Cleve Edmunds and GOP challenger Miriam Mim Woodring vie for District No. 4 seats in North Augusta and Belvedere. Edmunds says January will bring strong county government under capable leadership, contrasting with council friction blamed on Chairman Harold Graybeal.
Miriam Mim Woodring challenges incumbent Cleve Edmunds in District 4. Woodring says her campaign centers on organization empathy persistence and district knowledge. She and her husband Sam run the North Augusta Star now The Star for 23 years and have led many civic projects.
