Counties face GOP primary funding dispute in South Carolina
Four county election commissions Beaufort Chester Greenville and Spartanburg filed a suit in the South Carolina Supreme Court arguing a 2008 law does not apply to a 2012 primary. They contend the Election Commission lacks authority to run the primary and to contract with the Republican Party to cover costs. The counties say public funds would be used for a private function and seek to push costs onto the parties. The General Assembly allocated 680000 to the State Election Commission for the primary, while the commission estimates about 1300000. The SC Republican Party pledges to cover the shortfall with donations and fundraising.
