Offshore oil exploration seen as cleaner than tanker spills
Ronald Coleman assistant secretary of the Interior told a Columbia civic club that offshore drilling off South Carolina could conflict with shipping and fishing but cause little environmental damage. He projected 10 drilling platforms up to four pipelines and one to two gas plants, with leases 25 to 80 miles offshore, and said exploration could begin in about a year. He urged expanding energy production amid growing foreign oil dependence and warned another embargo could be worse than 1973.
