Alexander Dubcek is officially removed from his federal assembly post after six months in office as reformist support wanes. Josef Smrkovsky, a 1968 reform ally, also loses deputy president and lower house chairman roles in a broader reorganization aimed at erasing Dubcek influence.
In Nairobi the Somali Republic president Abdirashid Ali Shermarke was killed Wednesday by a gunman reportedly in a police uniform. Radio Mogadishu cut to announce the shooting. The attacker is in police custody.
Eastern Air Lines began using a secret weapons screening device on passengers boarding planes. The device, deployed at several east coast and southern airports, will allow detention for questioning if it flags suspicious travelers. Signs at ticket counters warn hijacking is a federal offense with penalties.

The Aga Khan 32 and Lady Sarah Crichton Stuart 29 will marry in Paris on October 18. The announcement was made by the prince's secretary after their engagement, made public a week earlier.

A sniper on a front porch in Palm Bay Florida killed two neighbors and wounded three others. Danny Thomas a 21 year old college student was arrested and held for questioning in Titusville jail. Six guns were seized including a 30 caliber carbine. Police used tear gas to flush the suspect from a house without firing any shots.
Moscow and Hanoi signed agreements expanding military and economic support after meetings between Soviet Premier Kosygin and North Vietnamese Premier Phan Van Dong. Tass noted substantial arms, equipment, food and credits to Hanoi while withholding specific sums.
