Westboro forgoes Aiken protest for WGAC airtime

Austin Rhodes says Westboro Baptist Church will not protest the funeral of Army National Guardsman Staff Sgt. Willie Harley in Aiken in exchange for a one hour interview on WGAC 580 today from 5 to 6 p.m. The service honors Harley and Spe. Luther Rabon of Lexington. Both served with Graniteville unit 1221st Engineer Clearance Company.

Local volunteers prepare final resting place of fallen Guardsman

Pine Lawn Cemetery Committee and American Legion Post 212 volunteers in Aiken cleaned grounds at Pine Lawn off Hampton Road to ready the burial of National Guardsman Staff Sgt. Willie Harley 48 who died October 1 in Afghanistan from an IED. Harley will be buried in the Harley family plot beside his mother with 113th veteran marker to be placed. The 1852 cemetery grounds have a long history and are stewarded by local volunteers aiming to maintain about every two weeks despite limited able-bodied members.

Commission Recommends Changes to Aiken Tree Pruning Ordinance

The Aiken City Planning Commission approved amendments to the tree pruning and removal provisions after a brief 20 minute meeting with a 5 to 1 vote. Peter Seaha opposed. Liz Stewart was absent. Four attendees voiced no public comment during the hearing. Seaha lamented the lack of public challenge to retain local tree care rights.

First of 33 Chilean miners freed after 69 days underground

Florencio Avalos emerged from the rescue capsule on Tuesday night as the first miner saved from the Chilean mine after 69 days trapped. Rescue workers greeted him with embraces as teams continued to extract the remaining miners.

Aiken County to launch tribunal disciplinary program

The Aiken County School District will unveil a tribunal to hear disciplinary appeals replacing area advisory councils. Four retired district administrators and a retired DJJ supervisor will serve on the tribunal, after training last week.
