Mead Corp withdraws a US District Court lawsuit seeking to halt Russell Dam on the Savannah River. The timber company owns about 7,000 acres along the river and said construction would pollute the water. Mead will continue to seek higher compensation for condemned land valued by mediators at 2.3 million dollars, which Mead argues is too low.

Sixth Columbia officer suspended in probe
A sixth Columbia policeman, Clyde J. Ballington, in charge of the evidence room, was suspended as the investigation nears three weeks. City officials declined comment. Earlier, Capt. John Earl Dennis and two detective lieutenants were suspended. The five filed a federal suit alleging civil rights violations. A hearing before U.S. District Judge Robert W. Woman Drops Out Of Patrol School In South Carolina
Columbia AP report says Charleen J Dukes of Orangeburg is the first woman in the State Highway Patrol training program to drop out. Seven women started the 12 week course. three men also left. The class now has 56 students. Commander Seaborn Seabrook noted the women are doing extremely well overall.

Kidnap Suspect Freed On Bond In Spartanburg Case
Donald E. Alexander 18 posted 10,000 bond on the kidnapping charge for abducting his former girlfriend Barbara Ramsey 17 from Byrnes High School at gunpoint on Sept. 20. He remained jailed on North Carolina charges of crimes against nature after psychiatric observation and was declared mentally competent to stand trial. The couple was located after a seven hour man hunt near Sylva by a state trooper.

Wimberly Found Guilty of Assault on Officer in Aiken
