SRS cleanup plan and new missions eyed at Savannah River Site
National security focus outlines a plan to cut SRS cleanup costs by 12 to 16 billion dollars, shorten schedules by two decades, and halve health safety environmental and security risks. It emphasizes DOE wide integration to consolidate and dispose nuclear materials and transport legacy transuranic waste to WIPP. The site aims to attract non-nuclear industry, develop a commercial reactor and training reactor, and support missions like plutonium and tritium production, MOX, and tritium stockpile management while maintaining protection of water and soil resources.
