Two bomb threats forced Advanced Fiber Yarns employees to evacuate Saturday evening. Plant Manager Jerry Hawkins said the alarms triggered an immediate evacuation as a caller claimed a blast would occur in about 30 minutes after the 4:25 pm call. A search of the building followed.
A court approved a settlement of 87000 in a wrongful death suit against the Aiken County Sheriff's Office over the March 25, 1996, death of Joseph A Maley. Ann LeCroy, personal representative, claimed Deputy William Hayen failed to drive prudently at US 278 and SC 19 near New Ellenton.
The International Festival 1999 drew a large crowd to downtown Aiken from 11 am to 6 pm. USC Aiken and the Aiken Downtown Development Association organized food from Britain Italy India Greece Poland Haiti and the Marine Corps League offering crafts entertainment and education. Two stages showcased Celtic Hispanic Uruguayan and Greek music plus local bands Bungle Bye and Smashing Dragons. Exhibits included a Society for Creative Anachronism demonstration Scottish sword dancing and Hindu temple displays.
Anna Michelle Darden and Frank Henry Worthington wed in a colonial themed ceremony at North Augusta during the eighth annual A Day to Remember event. The wedding proceeded smoothly as attendees enjoyed the Living History Park offering historic demonstrations and activities.
South Carolinians especially in Aiken County head toward a record turnout for the November 2 video poker referendum. Officials cite a surge in registrations with more than 16 000 new voters added before the October 2 cutoff and total rolls reaching about 2.1 million statewide while Aiken County exceeds 74 200 registered voters.
John Granaghan reflects on his rise to general manager at the Savannah River Plant after a call from DuPont executive Nick LeTang. He describes 10,000 workers making plutonium and acknowledges the career ending risk of the transfer, noting his Auburn degree and Army service.
The South Carolina Employment Security Commission serves Aiken and surrounding areas for over 50 years. Manager Charles Haneman notes the office placed about 3,500 people last year from roughly 15,000 registered clients and can relocate job seekers to larger markets if needed.
