Ernest Cato Jr pleaded not guilty in General Sessions Court October term to pointing a firearm carrying a pistol resisting arrest and failure to stop for a blue light and siren. The incident occurred on December 20 1973 as the prosecution opened its case yesterday.
Barbara Hutchison, a 47 year old American diplomat, was joking and in good spirits after seven leftist terrorists released her and six other hostages in Santo Domingo. The gunmen demanded a ransom and prisoners, but received only a safe getaway for all involved.
The government reported wholesale prices increased by one tenth of a percent in September as declines in farm prices offset higher costs for industrial goods. This follows near record increases in July and August, with September marking the smallest rise since a tenth of a percent drop last October.
New York AP reports the Dow Jones industrial average rose nine points to 631.02 on Wednesday, marking the sixth best gain on record as traders reacted to President Ford’s anti inflation proposals. The prior milestone was May 24, 1973, when the Dow jumped 29.42 points.

Governor John C. West rejected an appeal by Friends of the Hospital seeking to stop a new county hospital built by Hospital Corporation of America. He said the State Department of Health and Environmental Control acted to hear all views and that most information supported issuing the certificate of need to HCA. The group had alleged irregularities and charged the department failed to respond to a May 24, 1974 letter detailing concerns.
A shotgun shell exploded aboard a school bus en route to Jackson High School from the Vocational Educational Center near Aiken Augusta Highway injuring two Beech Island youths. Chris Golden and Joel Womack, both 16, were treated at University Hospital with hand lacerations and a leg wound. Sheriff's investigator E H Boyd leads the inquiry.
