AP reports attendance at Boston high schools dropped as court-ordered busing nears the fourth week. English High saw 400 students attend out of about 2,500 enrollment after a pupil police melee last Tuesday. The school’s enrollment is roughly 50 percent white and 50 percent black, with twice as many blacks as whites present that day.
The New York stock market opened mixed as investors weighed President Ford’s economic program. The Dow Jones industrial average slipped slightly while advances outpaced declines on the NYSE. Brokers expected erratic trading as Congress considers the plan and investors awaited the president’s news conference.
Oslo announces Eisaku Sato and Sean MacBride as co winners of the 1974 Nobel Peace Prize for limiting nuclear weapons and advancing human rights. The prize of 124000 dollars is shared equally. Sato, 73, reacted in Tokyo saying he knew of his candidacy but doubted winning. MacBride, 70, a former Irish independence fighter and UN official, credited for human rights work aiding South West Africa's independence from South Africa.
Dairy farmers told a Chicago hearing that rising costs for baling wire and feed threaten their viability unless the USDA guarantees a floor price of 7.50 per 100 pounds of milk. The proposal would raise prices by about 1.7 cents per quart to farmers and likely be passed to consumers.
The Franklin National Bank in New York, once the 20th largest U.S. bank, was declared insolvent by the Treasury Department. Most operations were sold to a consortium led by six European banks, while FDIC chief Frank Wille warned the failure does not imply a industrywide crisis.
Aiken police report the arrest of a juvenile and an adult after a failed attempt to break into the Big Star store on Richland Avenue. Officers pursued the suspects, who were found leaving in a small car, and they will face destruction of private property charges.
A Gloverville auto repair garage was burglarized Monday night with 2490 dollars in merchandise stolen. Jerry Morrell reported the break in at 830 AM yesterday, noting a tool box and a 250 dollar radio plus over 2000 dollars in personal tools missing. Christine for the Democratic runoff spot. Christine withdrew, citing a large vote gap and party advantage. Prosser and Laird advance to the November 5 general election along with four other Democrat candidates.
President Ford urged Congress and the public to accept higher taxes and less energy as part of an anti inflation program. He pressed for a 5 percent surcharge on high incomes and outlined steps to curb spending and boost home construction with $3 billion in loans.
Judge J B Ness presided over a Gener al Sessions Court session sentencing twenty four individuals on charges from forgery to DUI and driving under suspension. Guilty pleas were reported with sentences including two years in prison suspended on 60 days served and three years probation for Leonard Leroy Wood Jr and 350 dollars or four months for DUI for several defendants. Licenses were suspended for three year probation in each DUI case, with Donovan facing consecutive 350 dollars or 60 days for DUS. Other DUS terms included Willie Frank Knight at 900 dollars or one year and license suspension for five years.
