Baby Left At Hospital In Aiken

A day-old baby boy weighing about 8 pounds 6 ounces was left at Aiken Regional Medical Centers and placed into the care of the Aiken County Department of Social Services. Police responded about 6 30 a m. The infant is reported in good health. The act known as Daniel's Law protects a person who leaves a baby under 30 days old at a hospital from prosecution for abandonment.

United Way plans shift to focus on county needs

United Way of Aiken County seeks 2004 funding aligned to top local issues. President Michael Williamson outlined a move from a general campaign to a results oriented approach with town hall meetings to identify priority concerns for funding across more than 30 service agencies.

Foxhounds Prep for November Hunt Season in South

Whiskey Road Foxhounds and Aiken Hounds prepare for the formal fox hunting season starting November with cubbing preps in October. Dogs and horses are trained early mornings while land access remains limited in the United States. The opening hunt at Chime Bell Station Farms includes a blessing of the hounds on November 9 at 9 a.m.

Children learn fire safety during simulated drill at public safety HQ

Five and six year old kindergartners from South Aiken Presbyterian toured Aiken Public Safety as part of Fire Safety Week. They crawled through a smoke filled hallway to practice staying low and reaching a designated safe area with officers explaining detectors and evacuation plans.

Rural phone fee to go before court

South Carolina court to hear arguments on a 2.5 percent universal service fee added to phone bills rural areas. The Public Service Commission started the fund in 2001, now about 48 million dollars yearly, with 80 million collected since inception. The case seeks repayment plus interest, plaintiffs include the Consumer Advocate and trade groups, while a circuit court ruling upheld the fee.
