Fire officials said the blaze caused at least eight deaths as residents fled to fire escapes. Nancy Vasquez was rescued from an upper floor by firefighters using an aerial ladder amid power lines. Several others, including a mother and infant, were treated at St. Marys Hospital in critical or serious condition along with police officers who suffered smoke inhalation. About 75 firefighters from Hoboken Jersey City and Union City fought the blaze.
George Fred Dorn 71 of Route 5 died yesterday at HCA Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Graveside services are set for 2 p.m. tomorrow at Goodloope Baptist Church Cemetery Saluda County with Rev. C B Turner officiating. Dorn, a native of Saluda County, was a retired textile worker. Surviving: three sons Tommy Dorn Johnston Freddie Dorn Billy Dorn. two daughters Mrs. Charles Sizemore Thelma Dorn. Family visitation 7 to 9 tonight at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home.
