FAA notes the airliner had only a 10 day ferry permit after being out of mothballs in Las Vegas.

Volth, a fast growing industrial suburb, suffered the most damage as officials estimated losses at 1.6 million dollars and rising.
The Swedish Academy awarded 52 year old Soviet novelist Alexander Solzhenitsyn the 1970 Nobel Prize in literature for the ethical force with which he has pursued the traditions of Russian literature. His works are banned in the USSR.

The Federal Trade Commission proposes regulations to protect credit card and deferred payment plan customers. A Jan. 25 hearing will weigh the rules which target the growing stolen card trade. The plan would bar firms from billing customers on disputed charges until investigation and notification of findings.
A bomb exploded early today in the Marin County courthouse in San Rafael causing heavy damage to two court rooms but no injuries. Inspector Bowen Bridges said a anonymous call ten minutes before the blast warned of a bomb that would go off in five minutes. The dynamite device was planted in a toilet near Judge Joseph Wilsons first floor courtroom. The building, a Frank Lloyd Wright design, had been the site of a fatal shooting last August involving Judge Harold J. Haley.
A House education subcommittee approved a $1.5 billion desegregation proposal but its fate in Congress remains doubtful. The panel’s version spreads funds more widely nationwide than Nixon’s plan, which would allocate two thirds of the money to the South under his formula.
Ben Rusche of the Aiken County Governmental Study Committee spoke at Belvedere Jaycees about proposed home rule reforms. He argued current departments duplicate work and lack interdepartmental accountability, urging consolidation and a seven member at large county council for better representation and funding.

U S lawmakers from both parties lauded President Nixon's Indochina address calling it bold comprehensive and fair while urging Hanoi to respond. Senators Church Cooper Mansfield praised the proposal as a path to negotiated peace and WO prisoners of war exchange. Fulbright was unavailable for comment.
President Nixon proposed an immediate cease-fire with both sides in their current positions under international supervision and no military buildup. He urged widening Paris talks to Laos Cambodia and Vietnam and a negotiated U S troop withdrawal totaling 260000 by next spring. He called for a political settlement and unconditional POW releases.

The US Command reports 38 American combat deaths last week the lowest in 4.2 years. South Vietnamese deaths rose 40 percent. enemy casualties edged up. Total American deaths since 1961 stand at 43,775 with 289,800 wounded and 1,424 missing or captured.
