The League of Women Voters of Aiken County endorses the Home Rule Bill in full. An 8 p.m. open meeting at the County Health Center will inform voters with Mrs. John Lyon speaking and Mrs. Hobart W. Griffin assisting.
The Aiken Standard promotes a $270 Stumper contest deadline and urges readers to enter for a chance to win the cash prize. It encourages participation and promises a grand winner will receive the greenbacks.
Senator George D. Aiken, 78, a Republican and ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, underwent routine surgery at Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin Vermont. An aide said he was doing well and expected to be discharged in four to seven days.
AP reports Gina Lollobrigida quit rehearsals six times for her first TV drama before finally accepting in the sixth attempt. Barry Shear says her insistence on many script changes led to Geraldine Page replacing her in the Name of the Game segment A Sister from Napoli where she would play a Roman Catholic nun.
New York stocks started narrowly mixed with decliners slightly leading gainers on the NYSE. Armco Steel rose to 99.3, U S Steel to 33.75, Litton off 0.25, Sperry Rand down 0.25, Continental Oil up 0.25, Standard Oil of California up 0.4 as the Dow gained 5.75 to 782.45 in near record volume.
An off duty Portland officer bought parrot food seeds from pet shops, planted them at home, and found about 20 percent sprouted yielding roughly two ounces of marijuana per sprout. Pet shop owners say the seeds are widely sold and favored by parrots. The package claims sterilization by baking and non germination.
In Dallas, four masked gunmen invaded the home of contractor J. L. Williams and his partner Frederic Wagner after a dinner. They bound six victims with neckties and fled with jewelry valued at about $350,000, including rings worth $57,000. Police report the Williams family owned the loot.
In Bolivia a conservative bid to seize power faltered as leftist Gen Juan Jose Torres seized the presidential palace and prepared to assume the presidency. Civilians rallied for the left, opposing Gen Rogelio Miranda. Gen Fernando Sattori defected to Torres, while the nation’s largest labor union and student and professional groups called for further action.
Democratic candidate B W Baker of Langley accuses the Election Commission of a serious ballot error in the county council referendum. He says the sample ballot blends candidates with the referendum and calls for separate ballots to avoid nullifying the election.
Washington AP report notes that 67 year old Sen Strom Thurmond and his wife Nancy 23 announce they are expecting their first child next spring. The couple disclosed the news after circulating notices to close friends in Washington and Columbia.
Four out of state youths charged with housebreaking and larceny at three Aiken business firms on Sept. 1 entered pleas of guilty. Judge George Gregory imposed sentences including youth offender terms and probation for several defendants.
About 60 sales personnel from 16 companies attended Today's Chamber Sales Clinic where Sears advertising manager Pat Early urged public relations as essential for community acceptance. He framed PR around community customer and employee relations and urged managers to engage in local projects.
Police report 28 coin boxes robbed from 28 machines across Mitchell Shopping Center and Kalmia Plaza in Aiken. Owner Nick Ranges said $500 to $600 taken from the laundromats. Also 28 typewriters stolen from Langley-Bath-Clearwater High School with one new electric typewriter taken. no signs of forced entry.
About 200 residents in Montmorenci and Windsor areas express approval of using county equipment by County Road Commissioner Mackey Scott Sr. to clear railroad rights of way. A Montmorenci resolution by 117 citizens thanks Scott for services and county safety efforts. Windsor residents ask use of county forces to clear obstructions near Southern Railroad and U S Highway 78.
