Congress approved 74.5 million to upgrade current Bradley fighting vehicles and 1889 million to buy 60 new ones, with production at FMC Corporation in Aiken expected to resume after a brief slowdown. President Bush was anticipated to sign the defense appropriations bill this week. FMC had laid off 115 workers, about 30 percent of its staff, due to Defense Department cutbacks. Plant officials noted 75 workers would remain or find other arrangements.
About 115 people gathered in North Augusta to urge the Aiken County Board of Education to change school policy limiting religious activity. Attendees included Board members Sheran Proctor and Johnny Shaw, parents, students, lawyers, and staff. Rep. Tom Huff spoke on Lee v. Weisman, criticizing overreach. school board attorney Burkhalter defended the policy as preventing lawsuits.
Karen Diane Carter a physical education teacher at Aiken High School is among the five finalists for South Carolina 1993 Teacher of the Year. Finalists were chosen from 64 districts and will be interviewed by the State Selection Committee next year in Columbia. Other finalists include Robert F Chandler Deb by Cooke Christine S Fisher and Dodie Burns Magill.
In Ai ken County a three way race for treasurer pits incumbent Democrat Margie H. Plunkett against Republican Fay Hatcher and Libertarian Michael Hammons. Qualified voters as of Oct 3 can participate. Hammons, a computer programmer, pledges transparent banking balances monthly expenditures and separate funds.
Hammons pledges diligent courteous service and separate accounts to avoid co mixing. Fay Hatcher, IBT Local 8 assistant, advocates change and public access to how funds are spent, urging one on one meetings with the treasurer and accountability.
