University of Michigan psychologist Richard E. Nisbett says Southern whites respond with violence to insults due to cultural heritage from Cavaliers and Irish and Scotch borderlands. Northern whites, from Puritan or Quaker roots, show less tendency. Regional data show 36 percent of Southerners defend home honor versus 18 percent in the North and 80 percent versus 67 percent for defending family honor. A test with 65 male students measured anger after a staged insult.

Aiken FMC Gets Job Boost From Bradley Vehicle Upgrades

Congress approved 74.5 million to upgrade current Bradley fighting vehicles and 1889 million to buy 60 new ones, with production at FMC Corporation in Aiken expected to resume after a brief slowdown. President Bush was anticipated to sign the defense appropriations bill this week. FMC had laid off 115 workers, about 30 percent of its staff, due to Defense Department cutbacks. Plant officials noted 75 workers would remain or find other arrangements.

Citizens Unite To Lift School Religious Ban

About 115 people gathered in North Augusta to urge the Aiken County Board of Education to change school policy limiting religious activity. Carter Among Top Teachers Finalists for 1993 Award

Karen Diane Carter a physical education teacher at Aiken High School is among the five finalists for South Carolina 1993 Teacher of the Year.
