A minor tritium gas release occurred today at Savannah River Plant’s tritium facility around 7 40 a m via the stack. Officials estimate 7000 curies with southwest wind 12 to 14 mph and a maximum off site dose under 0 01 millirem. No evacuations or reported personnel exposure. routine monitoring continues.
The Associated Press reports tests indicate soul singer James Brown had PCP in his system when arrested after a two state car chase. Brown, 55, was charged with driving under the influence after a pursuit beginning and ending in Augusta Georgia. A blood analysis confirmed PCP presence per Circuit Solicitor Harte.
Partly cloudy and cool weather is forecast for today with a high in the mid 60s and a low tonight in the mid 40s. See Page 6A for full details.

Senator Strom Thurmond defended the Savannah River Plant’s safety history while acknowledging past mistakes. DOE officials said nuclear accident reporting procedures were violated in August due to a mailroom lapse at SRP. A New York Times study cited frequent reactor shutdowns from 1971 to 1987, far above civilian rates, raising license concerns.
PTL founder Jim Bakker, whose bid to buy back the ministry failed, says many obstacles remain as Toronto businessman Stephen Merrick signs a contract to buy PTL assets for 115 million. Bakker vows a long battle to restore the studios and theme park in bankruptcy court.
A consultants’ study for the Department of Energy finds weather and human error damaged confinement systems at Savannah River Plant reactors and notes repeated electrical equipment failures since 1971. The report says over half of 558 forced shutdowns from 1971 to 1987 stem from wide ranging equipment failures and criticizes reactive maintenance.
An AP panel of six judges named Lloyd Bentsen the winner over Dan Quayle in their debate and ABC News instant poll showed 51 percent of voters called Bentsen the winner. Analysts praised Bentsen's forceful turn while noting Quayle appeared artificial at times.
About 150 leading South Carolinians gather on Hilton Head Island for the Assembly on the Future of South Carolina. They will study environment government education and economics over four days and draft a report for the General Assembly. The commission appointed by Lt Gov Theodore and Gov Campbell has met statewide to set items. members include USC Aiken Chancellor Robert E Alexander and Miriam L Woodring. The education paper questions a statewide board and accountability standards for private and parochial schools.
