Knife incident at Ridge Spring-Monetta High School

A 17 year old student Shannon Jean Williams was found with a broken steak knife at Ridge Spring Monetta High School on Tuesday. The district says she was angry and upset and the weapon was shown to another student. Williams faces possible expulsion under the district zero tolerance policy.

Dropout rate steady in South Carolina schools

South Carolina’s high school dropout rate held at 2.7 percent in 1998-99 per the Education Department. In Aiken County the rate fell to 3.0 percent, with 4,955 of 184,755 statewide dropouts that year, up from 4,925 a year earlier. Superintendent Linda Eldridge cites disciplinary practices and programs like Last Chance Academy as factors in declines.

Polls show mixed results on support for lottery plan

Mason-Dixon poll sponsored by The Post and Courier and WCBD-TV finds 48 percent in favor and 41 percent opposed with 11 percent undecided. Interviews with 625 registered voters between Sept 28 and 30. margin of error four points. Earlier January poll showed 62 percent favored. State voters decide in November on amending the constitution to allow a state lottery with education earmarked proceeds.

A Day to Remember brings 1700s life to Living History Park

North Augusta hosts the ninth annual A Day to Remember of Colonial Times at Living History Park October 14 15 featuring 150 reenactors in authentic 18th century dress.
