Gas release triggers shelter alarm at Savannah River Center
A gas release in a Savannah River Technology Center lab caused a shelter alert Monday morning. Workers were consolidating nitric acid into a drum when a device to vent gases proved insufficient. They sealed the drum and evacuated, leaving the hood operating as the room cleared. The gas mainly carbon dioxide with trace nitrous oxide and nitric oxide.
