Special election set for House District 81 seat

Voters will pick between Republican Robert S. Perry and independent Scott Singer in the special election to fill the seat vacated by the late Rep. Rudy Mason. Polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday across Aiken and surrounding precincts with no Democrat candidate on the ballot. The winner serves one year before a full term vote in November 2000. Aiken Institute marker dedication links past to present

A ceremony at the Aiken County Public Library marked the dedication of a historical marker for the Aiken Institute. Alumni, officials, and National History Day winners Christine Lumans, Jack Jenkins, and Betty Sheen attended while Julian Salley recalled school memories and the plaque was unveiled by local leaders.

I-20 Crash Kills Augusta Man In South Georgia

An I-20 crash near the Georgia line killed 21 year old Martin A. Searles of Augusta. The tractor trailer driven by his father Douglas Searles struck a minivan as it changed lanes. The cab tumbled toward the Savannah River and halted traffic for hours.

Red Cross director meets Hurricane Floyd relief challenge
