Allied General Nuclear Services AU plant at Barnwell issued notices to twenty five more workers on Monday reducing staff to 125. Remaining workers focus on removing uranium residues boxing records and closing files. The plant shutdown follows the government’s refusal to purchase or fund further work.
Aiken County netted about 175000 from a public auction of 307 parcels over two days. Monday sales brought 74466 and yesterday's sales about 100000 with bidding peaking at 12000 for 79 acres near Wagener. High bidders face an 18 month wait to gain title while original owners may buy back if they missed the tax deadline.
The Aiken County Council passed a resolution urging state and federal lawmakers to support locating a new 4 billion production reactor at the Savannah River Plant in Aiken County. The plan calls for cooperation among county officials, SRP, business leaders, and the public to prepare advocacy and distribution strategies.
Aiken County learns unofficially that it did not qualify for a 1 million federal grant for the Judicial Center renovation. Officials expect notification from EDA in weeks as bids for the project set for November and December. The total Judicial Center budget is about 6 million with the courthouse renamed last night.
The Jaycee County Fairgrounds soldly transformed as dozens of trucks delivered green gator and black bumblebee rides plus a merry go round and several thrill rides. Nightly circus shows and games attract visitors with themed nights and reduced ride prices. Best of show prizes go to local growers and bakers. The fair runs at U S 1 in Aiken with 6 dollar all day ride access.
Robert L. Morgan, manager of the Savannah River Operations Office, was honored with the U.S. Department of Energy Secretary's Award in Washington. Secretary Donald Paul Hodel praised Morgan for outstanding service in establishing the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management and guiding the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 program. Effective January 25, 1983, Morgan also became project director for implementation planning of the Act.
