Public testimony is sought by a state study committee on nuclear fuel processing plants and radioactive waste storage. Gen. Hugh P. Harris chairs the group which meets Thursday at the State House. Citizens should notify secretary Mrs. B S Clark. The committee was created earlier this year by registrants involved in Barnwell plant location.
Postmaster General Winton Blount calls for a boycott of French goods in response to France’s actions. The move aims to curb heroin and illicit traffic flowing into the United States through France.
In Belfast Northern Ireland British troops hunted for wounded IRA guerrillas and arms caches after a day and night of violence left one soldier dead and twelve civilians injured. The fallen soldier Brian Hall age 22 was found amid bomb debris from an army post wreck. The army said the device held up to 100 pounds of gelignite. Troops returned fire at snipers and used rubber bullets and batons against mobs as clashes spread through the city. Three wounded IRA guerrillas were believed treated at secret makeshift hospitals in the Catholic district.
President Nixon uses Taft-Hartley emergency powers for the first time to halt port strikes threatening national commerce. He proposes a five member inquiry board to consider a back-to-work injunction and avert further disruption.
Secretary of State William P. Rogers continued seeking an Arab Israeli accord after a major policy speech. He planned a bilateral session with Jordanian Foreign Minister Abdullah Salah and met Abba Eban in a brief 9 minute encounter at the United Nations General Assembly.
Senators Muskie and Mondale propose a bill to cut Social Security taxes for 63 million Americans while boosting taxes for 8 million. The measure accompanies Nixon’s 15.4 billion tax cut in three years, set for House consideration with likely support despite labor opposition. Draft notice changes extend to 30 days with a lowered lottery number to 125.
Billy Lamar Steelman of Gloverville received a six year sentence in Aiken County General Sessions Court with four years in prison suspended and three years probation after pleading guilty to assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. He was accused of shooting and wounding a woman friend at a Gloverville trail.
President Nixon will dispatch Henry Kissinger and a full traveling party to Beijing later this month to make advance preparations for a planned visit to Communist China, the White House announced.
John Hussey of 927 Calhoun Street in Aiken won this week’s $50 prize in the Aiken Standard football contest with room to spare. Six entries tied for the prize, each with two wrong game picks, and Hussey was among three entries by him. He also correctly guessed the tie-breaker game total points to win.
Aiken County Legislative Delegation endorsed a 67 000 purchase of 336 vote recorders and 55 demonstration recorders from Computer Election Services to speed county voting. Equipment will be tested in February 1972 school board election with funds drawn from 1966 bond money redirected by special legislation.

More than 800 inmates staged a destructive disturbance in the Dallas County jail after protests over prison conditions and treatment of Dallas poor people. One prisoner, Lawrence Edward Jackson, 36, died from a cut finger. five inmates and several guards were injured. The clash lasted about 342 hours with some 300 inmates involved before authorities quelled the riot. Sheriff Clarence Jones said the unrest followed two weeks of negotiations over grievances including medical care, food, and mail policies.
An Attica state prison inmate testified in U.S. District Court that troopers tortured him with lighted cigarettes after control was reestablished Sept 13 following a four day rebellion that killed 42. Another inmate said a trooper held a rifle to his head and warned him.
Saigon says 364 NVA troops died in clashes ending 10 days of fighting near the Cambodia frontier. U.S. advisers note apparent enemy withdrawal as ground forces slowly reopen two highways northwest of Saigon. Saigon reports heavy losses near Krek after a tank-led advance pierced Highway 7 to Fire Base Alpha. 134 NVA killed near Krek with 230 more killed by air and artillery. South Vietnamese losses reported at 10 dead and 39 wounded as Monday’s fighting remained the heaviest since Sept. 25.
The U S Army Corps of Engineers announced a November 1 hearing in Greenwood on a possible national recreation area near Clark Hill Hartwell and the Trotters Shoals reservoirs. A second hearing is set for November 2 in Elberton Georgia. The study covers lakes and portions of several South Carolina counties and a large area in Georgia.
Rep Marshall Cain of Aiken continued his filibuster against the state Senate reapportionment plan in the South Carolina House. Cain vows to press the talkathon until changes are made. Rep Julius Baggett of McCromick favors the plan and expects lawmakers to stay up late to end the filibuster.
Four Mobile mothers with petitions to Congress opposing school busing begin a cross country trip to Washington D C. They plan to visit 50 cities, marching two miles in each stop to protest busing while traveling in a white camper labeled UCCA Walk to Washington Against Busing Mothers March and People Power.
Sen. Ed gar Brown endorses no new taxes for next year as South Carolina agencies begin budget hearings for the coming fiscal year. He argues against tax rate increases and notes a projected revenue rise while urging restraint to fund indigent services and prisons.
