Early arrivals at the Aiken Electric Co-op will enjoy two bands from 6 to 7 30 p m before Loretta Lynn Day. Miss Lynn and her troupe headline the event to help reach the United Fund goal of 278 152 dollars in Aiken County.
A 800-man South Vietnamese task force advancing from Krek toward Fire Base Alpha near the border faced enemy resistance after moving within about one mile. The push follows days of shelling and prior failed relief attempts as U.S. and South Vietnamese forces bombard the Krek region.
Secretary of State William P. Rogers proposed a six point interim peace plan at the U N Security Assembly. The United States reported broad backing from major European powers including the Soviet Union Britain and France for a renewed push to reach a Middle East settlement.
Michigan Sen. Philip Hart told a Clarksdale Mississippi audience that segregation in the North has been informal and harder to target, while urging the nation to follow Mississippi's example in racial progress. He spoke at a rally for Aaron Henry and urged local citizens to push for broader civil rights reforms.
William J. Pierce Jr. seeks to answer a second murder charge as Jeff Davis County Superior Court opens. He was sentenced to life for the January 28 killing of Vivian Miles and faces nine murders across Georgia North Carolina and South Carolina. The new charge involves Helen Wilcox who disappeared from her store near Hazlehurst about the same time.

The Supreme Court begins a new term with two vacancies delaying votes on death penalty questions and other issues. Tributes were given to Justices Black and Harlan, who retired last month. Black died a week later and Harlan is hospitalized with cancer. The last meeting had nine justices and upheld that newspapers cannot be prevented from publishing the Pentagon Papers.
Three people from Tennessee died during a private plane hijack in Jacksonville Florida. The FBI said the hijacker shot his wife and the pilot before dying. A passenger and the copilot survived while police arrested one more suspect. The plane flew from Nashville toward Atlanta with a bizarre demand.
British troops and guerrillas clashed for about two hours in east Belfast during a predawn riot. Army spoke of hitting two gunmen in the Mountpottinger district as gunfire and explosions shook the area.
Aiken County Grand Jury handed true bills against seven men in the Belvedere motorcycle club killings from June. Accused face two counts each of murder and armed robbery plus related charges of assault with intent to kill, larceny and receiving stolen goods. Defendants are Osgood M. LeLand William R. Holland Richard Lee Richards Gary V. Faust Bruce G. Poe Dennis G. Davis and Danny Ward Roberson who remains at large. No trial date yet.
Deputy Chief of Protocol Marion Smoak of Aiken will accompany California Gov Ronald Reagan on a two week fact finding mission to six Asian countries. He and his wife Frances depart Washington for Los Angeles then Hawaii Taiwan Singapore Bangkok and Seoul before a Japan visit including Kyoto Osaka and an emperor audience. Smoak’s State Department duties include scheduling housing security and liaison with embassies.
HORNET QUEEN Miss Tish Cavanaugh sponsored by Pat Scott was chosen 1971 Homecoming Queen at Aiken High during halftime ceremonies at Aiken's game with Booker T. Washington Friday night. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F B Cavanaugh of Aiken.
The Aiken County Grand Jury began weighing scores of cases as Judge James A. Spruill Jr. presided. Guilty pleas from inmates jailed since May were heard, with a Belvedere motorcycle club case change of venue possible. Six suspects face murder and related charges. a seventh fugitive is sought.
Fourth Circuit judge James Alexander Spruill Jr visits Aiken County General Sessions for a two week term. He describes himself as moderate between harsh and lenient, supports capital punishment but cites no electrocuted cases in his long career. He notes law has shifted toward leniency and reflects on Attica while acknowledging his ties to Cheraw and the University of South Carolina. He is a Rhodes scholar with five children and hobbies in swimming and gardening.
The Aiken County Sheriff's Department adds two investigators Virgil R. Wilkins and John D. Elliott to work with narcotics and dangerous drugs. They will run educational programs and create an enforcement section to target illicit drugs. Wilkins, Elliott are graduates of the Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Academy at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Wilkins is known for youth work with Aiken Teen Town and has extensive law enforcement training.
