Scientists report a 23 000 year old boomerang carved from mammoth tusk unearthed in Oblazowa Park Poland. The cave also yielded a human thumb bone and remains of amphibians birds reptiles and mammals. Researchers note the artifact is boomerang shaped rather than proven to return.
In Johannesburg a 48 year old surrogate mother Pat Anthony delivered triplets by cesarean section at Park Lane Clinic. The two boys and a girl are the daughter Karen Ferreira Jorge’s children, conceived after Ferreira Jorge’s uterus was removed following her prior birth.

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit Southern California this morning, rattling windows and forcing power cuts in parts of downtown Los Angeles. Aftershocks followed as far as Las Vegas with citizens reporting frightened reactions and damage to older buildings including the Herald Examiner.
Aiken County seniors posted a strong gain in the SAT with an overall 869, 37 points above the state average but below the national level. Aiken High led county scores at 897 while South Aiken, Midland Valley and North Augusta also scored above the state average.

Iraqi warplanes attacked a tanker off Iran while two Iranian speedboats attacked a Pakistani flag tanker in the Persian Gulf. Japanese and other tankers faced machine gun fire in the Strait of Hormuz with minor damage and no casualties. U.S. warships guided relief ships north toward Bahrain as another convoy moved south. A Pakistani National Tanker Co. vessel, Johor, reported by radio at 8:03 a.m. sailing from Karachi to Jubail.
Sen. Terry Sanford of North Carolina will announce opposition to Robert H. Bork's Supreme Court nomination becoming the first Southern Democrat to publicly oppose. Early opposition from other Senate Democrats could form an anti Bork bloc as polls show growing public resistance after hearings.
