West Columbia woman charged with child neglect

A 2-year-old boy was found alone near Interstate 26 and Bush River Road at 4:30 a.m. A passerby alerted authorities. Helen E. Hopkins, 35, told investigators the child’s hotel stay was due to insecticide spraying and that she left the room at 8:30 a.m. to buy a drink. the boy disappeared upon her return and she reported him missing.

Vincent Hankinson 31 of Aiken confessed to stealing a 1990 blue Ford Taurus station wagon and cash after vanishing with the car en route to a polygraph test. He was arrested on Richland Avenue and charged with larceny and filing a false police report. The missing money was not recovered. Hankinson faced booking at the Aiken County Detention Center.

Aiken Jaycees Christmas Shopping Tour Aids Local Children

The Aiken Jaycees annual Christmas shopping tour helps about 50 area children with shoes socks and winter clothing plus a small educational toy from Santa. Donations totaling 1250 have been raised with drives through the Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce. last year the program spent 4776 on clothing and 677 on toys, with 247 in postage and other overhead.
