Land costs push coast road project bills higher

Myrtle Beach area road work costs rise as high land values push up rights of way payments. The Horry County project effort exceeds 20 million over budget already and 159 million spent on land purchases is a fraction of the 1.2 billion total for area roads. Officials blame juries and condo condemnation cases for higher payments, while critics say state offers rely on appraisals and that landowners fear post construction damage. Local officials cite the new one cent sales tax as a future funding signal.
