About 180 people gathered in The Alley in downtown Aiken for the annual Christmas season kickoff. Mayor Fred Cavanaugh and wife Lee lit the tree ceremony as carols filled the air. Children cheered as Mr and Mrs Santa Claus joined, and the crowd sang Jingle Bells and Silent Night.
Sheltered by rain, South Carolinians join the nationwide post Thanksgiving spree. Betty Sims and Dawn Nivella describe it as a family tradition. Debbie Kacko travels with her mother in law for predawn deals. A 11 year old boy camps out for a Pokemon board game for his family. James Lemmon and son express excitement for Pokemon merchandise as doors ready to open.
Clearwater firefighters returned to the vacant textile building after hotspots flared up again following an earlier extinguishing. Assistant Chief Richmond Lamb said crews from 14 departments worked through the night, starting around 9 40 p.m. Thanksgiving and leaving about 5 45 a.m. Reports note the fire began in an enclosed roof area.
Fire crews battled a blaze that gutted a structure, burning from the roof down. The cause remains under investigation as crews from multiple departments including Clearwater Bath Belvedere Beech Island Langley North Augusta Aiken and Granitev ille Vaucluse Warrenville joined the effort at Midland Valley Plaza. Meriwether Eureka Jackson Center and Savannah River Site provided support with engines and a fuel truck. Assistant Chief Sean Johnson of Bath Volunteer Fire praised the cooperation among departments.
Index lists Julian C. Hammond of West Columbia and Ruth C. Wilson of North Augusta along with funeral homes Thompson and Hatcher and Rowland. Carl Denny Scroggs of North Augusta is also noted with Hatcher Funeral Home and Rowland.
Local shopkeepers in downtown Aiken reported heavy sales as shoppers packed streets and stores. Birds and Butterflies owner Ron Brenneman noted 300-500 percent higher business than normal Friday while Elliott Office Supply staff also saw a very busy day. Lionel Smith Ltd and Tea Garden Gifts reported strong traffic with many customers buying gifts and goods amid Holly Days events.
Friday's draw results show Cash 9 and Midday 4.2.2. Evening Cash 3 lists 32, 7, ig Game 17, 21, 22, 39, 38. ig money ball 34 appears in the sequence.
Salley celebrates its 34th Annual Chitlin Strut with a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. at Dean Swamp Masonic Lodge, a parade at 10 a.m., and chitlins ready by 11 a.m. An estimated 30,000 to 60,000 people are expected to attend to enjoy the delicacy.
