The Marion County Sheriff's Department told WBTW that residents reported dozens of sightings of a large brown lion. An eyewitness described the animal crossing S.C. 576 and wearing a collar. Authorities say the lion has been loose two days but will not disclose its escape location.
In WENO Nevada a light shower, 0.19 inches, ended a 129 day dry spell the longest since 1888 officials say. National Weather Service meteorologist Scott Hickman called the rain welcome after such a long dry period. In Atlanta Georgia House Speaker Newt Gingrich scheduled a news conference amid expectations he would not run for president in 1996.

Salvation Army in Aiken reports higher aid demand with 625 applications, up 10 percent from last year. About three to four people will be served per intake. Funds come from Red Kettle drives, direct mail, and the Angel Tree at Aiken Mall, with gifts due by December 16. Last year the Kettle raised $7,000 and mail appeals added $25,000 in funding.
