Thurmond aide Duke Short to retire after Thurmond’s term
Duke Short, chief of staff to U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond for nearly a decade, will retire on January 2 alongside the senator. A longtime Senate aide since 1974, Short plans to stay in Alexandria, Virginia, become a consultant, and write a life vignette book about Thurmond as the senator nears his 100th birthday. Jail escapee to face charges in South Carolina case
