BB safety claims questioned after DOE backed independent report

BB faced scrutiny over a steam pipe system inspection at Savannah River Site A Area after an independent review by GEM Technologies found two deficient valves out of more than 2 000. An earlier BB survey flagged safety concerns but DOE sided with GEM. BB sought to secure a contract and positive DOE publicity, prompting ethics probes involving DOE officials.

Thanksgiving dinner grows with volunteers and donors

The event, started weeks before the 2005 Thanksgiving holiday, expanded from 1000 diners to over 2200 last year. George and volunteers describe full community support with anonymous donations, including 150 turkeys from a donor. Organizers aim for a large turnout, rain or shine, with the dinner free from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday in The Alley unless rain forces relocation to the municipal center.
