Keeping it cool with safer cellular batteries advised
Wireless companies and federal safety officials outline steps to prevent overheating and possible explosions. Consumers should avoid placing batteries near metal objects, keep them dry, and prevent crushing or dropping when charged. Ensure batteries and chargers are from authorized dealers and compatible with the carrier or model.
Exploding cell phone batteries prompt recalls
Federal safety officials report 83 incidents of cell phone batteries exploding or igniting over two years. Most fires stem from counterfeit or faulty batteries and chargers. The CPSC has issued safety tips, pressed for better standards, and noted three voluntary recalls since January, including Verizon Wireless and Kyocera Wireless Corp.
