Aiken City Council gave first reading approval to annex a 25.07 acre tract behind Arby’s on Whiskey Road for a single 18 000 square foot Wal-Mart store. Final action is set for December 14.
The Aiken Standard will honor the area’s top gridiron players on Thanksgiving Day naming its All Area Football Team. The edition will also reveal the player of the year and the coach of the year.
After a work session the Hopeland City Council supported Christmas at Hopeland a display program running December 14 to 20. The plan features a 25 foot tree and six foot lighted swans with concerts 7 to 8 pm and nightly park hours 6 to 9 pm. About 5000 of 9000 in materials cost has been raised from corporate and private donors.

State climatologist D.J. Smith says a frontal system tied to recent severe weather will arrive for Thanksgiving with a 20 percent rain chance early. Expect partly cloudy skies, highs in the lower 60s and mid 40s lows, and seasonal temperatures with light morning showers possible.
In Saluda County and nearby areas a deadly weekend storm ripped through homes and trailers. Garris Havird, 74, died from chest injuries when his wood frame home collapsed in Hollywood. Louise Havird, 69, hospitalized in Lexington. About 30 people to Newberry Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. Saluda and Newberry counties reported over 30 injuries. tornadoes could be involved per National Weather Service probes. Communities mourn while residents describe surviving the extreme winds.
South Carolina Baptists plan to work and pray with President elect Bill Clinton and Al Gore while urging dialogue on abortion gay rights and contraception. Leaders like Donald Kirkland and Steve Cloud say support is mixed and tensions are inevitable as the 1 800 church convention weighs its stance.
The American Medical Association issues guidelines urging doctors to routinely question elderly patients about abuse and neglect. The guidance notes mistreatment affects about 2 million Americans over 60 yearly and urges private interviews, thorough exams, reporting suspected abuse, hospitalizations or court orders if danger exists, and protection from restraints or mind altering drugs in care facilities.
Carlisle Tire and Rubber Company plans to relocate sales, customer service, credit, general accounting and business executive functions from Carlisle, Pennsylvania to an office complex near its Verenes Industrial Park wheel manufacturing and warehouse facility in Aiken. The move should be completed by May 1983.
