Railroads and Rivalries Shape Early South Carolina Route

An 1830s start of the South Carolina Canal and Railroad culminates in Barnwell’s railpass ban myth, Barnwell’s later regret, and a rivalry between Aiken and Beech Island areas over the line. Governor Hammond and Cant Williams back routes, while upgrades and beech island hills test engineering. The tale frames rail progress, local politics, and community stakes.

First American Empire Builder Engine At West Point Foundry

A historic locomotive built for the South Carolina Railroad arrived in Charleston aboard the Niagara on October 23. After tests in late 1830, it ran its first excursion on January 15, 1851. The South Carolina line carried mail on its Hamburg to Charleston runs, a pioneer route. Night travel used pine-knot fires for headlights.
