Survey on SC children welfare shows rising mothers in labor force
The 1997 Kids Count Report notes 65.6 percent of mothers with under six and 74.8 percent with children ages 6-17 are in the labor force. Yet poverty remains high in Aiken County, with 19 percent of children in poverty and 21.6 percent of babies born to mothers without a high school education. Dr. Linda Eldridge urges parental involvement, limiting TV time, and prioritizing education as paths to opportunity.

State welfare ranking, SC sees drops in prenatal care and youth crime
The Kids Count report shows SC high school monthly alcohol use up slightly since 1993 while monthly marijuana use more than doubles. SC ranked 48th in children's well being earlier this year. 19,599 juveniles were referred for delinquency last fiscal year, 42 percent under 15, and two of three delinquents came from households under $20,000. Allendale County shows worst juvenile stats and low prenatal care, with 51 percent of mothers lacking adequate care and 12 percent of babies born to mothers under 18. County also at bottom for poverty, infant mortality, and teen pregnancy rates.
