The 197 Kids Count Report released today shows Aiken County children shrinking as a share of the population while births to teen and single mothers rise. In 1996, 36 099 children under 18 lived in the county, 27.1 percent of the population, with poverty and abuse also rising and many families in single parent homes.
The report aggregates figures across the period showing 7574 babies born to single mothers 76225 children living in poverty level households 1460 investigations into child abuse or neglect and 71139 domestic assaults reported, reflecting scale of welfare and safety concerns.
SLED cracks down on arcade machines that pay out cash for little or no skill. At least 70 penny fall devices were seized Wednesday across eight counties. $200 to $3,000 per machine confiscated. No arrests yet. Operators face fines up to $500 and up to a year in prison.
In Des Moines Iowa seven McCaughey babies born Wednesday remain in the neonatal ICU. Doctors say the day old septuplets four boys and three girls are thriving and within normal weight ranges for their ages. All required ventilator support but show remarkable development. The family cites faith and asks for prayers as the mother recovers.
A survey released today notes increasing births to teens and single mothers in Aiken County. Mental Health Association staff report growing numbers using the Welcome Baby program and Nurture Home for teen mothers. The 1997 Kids Count Report cites 152 births to under eighteen in 1995, 8.1 percent of all county births, and single mothers accounting for 30.6 percent of county deliveries in 1995 versus 19.3 percent in 1985.
