Truck wreck fatal to one North Augusta man

A 1 year-old North Augusta man died Thursday night when his pickup collided with a tandem tractor trailer on Atomic Road near North Augusta. The driver, James Sumter Burns of 1612 Atomic Road, was speeding and hit the second trailer. The crash near a CSE Trucking lot was investigated by the coroner and SCPHP.

Future golf history returns at Aiken Golf Club reopens

Jim McNair, former Highland Park Golf Course owner, plans a mid December reopening of the semi private Aiken Golf Club. The retro experience will highlight the course legacy with era architecture and a roster of famed visitors including May Dunn Chick Evans and the Turnesa brothers. The course opened in 1912 for Highland Park Hotel guests and was a Southeast staple until economic decline prior to the hotel’s 1949 demolition.

Governor seeks date for flag vote in SC

The NAACP says a vote date on removing the Confederate battle flag atop the Statehouse is required to end a tourism boycott. Gov Hodges urges a definite day while defending his King holiday proposal and warning only Legislature can lower the flag. The boycott runs until the flag is removed, with protests and calls for action from NAACP leaders.
