The Aiken County Court of General Sessions stalled Monday as several witnesses and two defendants failed to appear. One murder case was continued to the January term on defense motions. Assistant Solicitor LaVaun Fox announced five cases are set for trial at today's session.
Mrs. Phillip A. Hart wife of Michigan senator was among 186 arrested after an unsanctioned Mass for Peace at the Pentagon. She was arraigned in Eastern Virginia and posted 25 dollars bail, will face trial January 14 alongside others for obstructing federal building corridors. She defended the action as a peaceful protest.
Kiowa County Sheriff Virgie Weitner said prisoners pried open a door and escaped briefly on Sunday but returned to the jail. The inmates then raided a nearby service station for beer and cigarettes before resuming confinement. no inmates were missing when the sheriff arrived at 5 p.m.
Washington says North Korea informed the United States the three men from the downed helicopter crew are in medical care and in normal condition after a training mission over the DMZ region. The report was given at Panmunjom during a Military Armistice Commission meeting.
Rock singer Janis Joplin, 26, was arrested Sunday night in Tampa on two counts of profanity and one count of indecent language after detectives tried to quell a crowd at her concert with bullhorns. She was released on bond of 504 dollars. police reported no violence.
The 46,000 ton carrier USS Oriskany returned to Alameda California after nine months in Vietnam. About 3,500 crew members were greeted by fog signals and tears of joy as the ship tied up at the U S Naval Air Station. After a week at Alameda she will head to Hunters Point for a two month overhaul.

Prouty of Vermont and Spong of Virginia defend his qualifications and reject unproven ethics charges. The AP tally reaches 39 for, 40 against, with 21 undecided. Leadership Conference on Civil Rights urges rejection. Senate leaders push toward a vote, with possible delay to next week.
Israeli jets raid Jordan three times on Monday with one downed aircraft. Seven killed and 11 wounded as Jordanian forces, led by King Hussein, returned fire near Salt. An Egyptian radar station at Al Mazar was hit during a separate strike over southern Jordan. The pilot parachuted to safety. The two hour raid targeted gun positions in southern Jordan.
A AEC spokesman said no immediate shutdowns at Savannah River Plant or Hanford Works. Plans to close two small Hanford reactors were rescinded. Instead the two reactors will operate alternately. Congress considered restoring funds for Hanford operations.

North Vietnamese guns just inside Cambodia opened fire on Monday near Bu Prang, prompting two two hour bombing runs by Air Force jets. South Vietnamese forces reported 10 soldiers wounded and nine enemy dead in clashes within two miles of Bu Prang. Heaviest fighting earlier Sunday reached north of Saigon near the Cambodian border and 15 miles south of Da Nang.
Joseph Patrick Kennedy, 81, remained near death after a sixth heart attack as family gathered at the Hyannisport compound. Sargent Shriver said the end was near while Kennedy’s health had declined after years of strokes and heart problems. Surviving kin including Edward M. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy were joined by Jacqueline Onassis as the family awaited the outcome and Kennedy reportedly received last rites.
