One family gains closure as skeletal remains found on Shaw's Creek in 1991 are positively identified as Jackie Council, ending eight years of missing person questions. Three young women were found murdered in a half mile area, with Townsend noting likely murder in each case and leaving many questions unanswered.
Construction of a new county jail on Wire Road runs six months behind, with completion possibly slipping to July 2001. Administrators reshuffle on site while inmate numbers rise, as a disputed $1 million security doors contract stalls final bidding and Projekt schedule.
The Pew Partnership, a Charlottesville based civic research group, selected Aiken as one of 19 sites for a two year study to document how communities solve major problems. Researchers will review Aiken County infant mortality reduction from 13 to 4.9 per 1000 live births and assess contributing factors with Rutgers University.
Aiken County Council defeated a renovation and expansion plan 7 to 1 after Kathy Rawls questioned the county's liquidity.
