Aiken players dominated the USTA regional at Woodside Plantation Country Club. Ginny Teague won the women's 65 singles, Woody Holmes took the men's 65s, and two all-Aiken finals led doubles titles for Paula Garth with Lynn Johnson and Randy Singer with Pete West. Others from Aiken, Augusta, and nearby areas won or reached finals in multiple divisions as 108 players competed in age group and National Tennis Registry events.
History was made at Camden as Lonesome Glory won the $100,000 added Colonial Cup by nose over Rowdy Irishman. The 9 year old earned $69,540 plus a $250,000 Nations Bank Challenge bonus, finishing 2 3/4 miles in 5:08 2/5 with Blythe Miller aboard. Plumb Bob took NSA top 3 year old honors in the Woolfe Memorial. Jonathan Kiser and Arch Kingsley Jr. tied for SA leading rider with 22 wins.
San Francisco moves to 10 1 and stretches winning streak to 10 games to clinch their 13th division title in 17 years as Steve Young throws for a score and runs for another. Terry Kirby returns kickoff for a TD as Carolina’s upset bid fades.
South Aiken High School junior Elizabeth Sauerborn reached the state singles final, losing 1-6 6-1 6-4 to Elizabeth Proctor of Myrtle Beach. Proctor also beat Sauerborn in Belton's Hall of Fame Classic.
