Great American Smokeout promotes quitting smoking nationwide
The 24th annual Great American Smokeout observed today invites smokers to abstain for one day with hope of lasting quit attempts. The American Cancer Society aims to cut adult smoking, prevent youth initiation, and launches Fresh Start cessation training after the event.
Reasons to quit smoking harms and cancer risks
Smoking accounts for at least 30 percent of all cancer deaths and roughly half of continuing smokers die prematurely. An estimated 164,100 new lung cancer cases will be reported in 2000 with about 3,000 deaths caused by secondhand smoke. Smoking is linked to cancers beyond lung including mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, pancreas, cervix, kidney and bladder. Since 1987 more women have died from lung cancer than breast cancer. From 1991 to 1997 current cigarette smoking among high school students rose 22 percent. Nearly four million American adolescents currently smoke and about one in five male high school students uses smokeless tobacco.
