South Carolina Baptists Endorsed Resolutions at 1973 Meeting
The South Carolina Baptist Convention wrapped its 153rd annual session with resolutions opposing legalized gambling, urging labeling of alcohol like drugs and tobacco, and calling for energy conservation. Leighton Ford led a speakers' lineup as budget and leadership choices were approved, including James R. Bruce as president and Hovie Revis Jr. and Harry Finch as vice presidents. A new 10 member committee was approved to study a convention conference center. Governor Jimmy Carter urged Christian influence in government and discussed Watergate politics. The Edward A. McDowell Award went to Rev. J. Martin England for human rights work, as enrollment at six Baptist seminaries rose about 10 percent.
