Langley Dam and Langley Pond History and Impact
Langley Dam, built in 1854 as an earthen barrier 900 feet long and 20 feet high, powered a 24 mile pond that fed more than 30 mills including Graniteville Manufacturing Bath Paper and Langley Manufacturing Co. The dam and mills faced disasters from fires to the 1886 Charleston earthquake, with dam breaches that damaged the Langley Cotton Factory and Bath Paper Mill. Langley Pond later became owned by Aiken County and the Aiken Land Conservancy, expanding Langley Pond Park to about 285 acres. The pond gained national attention when the U. S. Rowing Team used it as a training site for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
