Chicago police ordered 16 residents at Rockwell Gardens to marry or leave after a Sept. 20 gang violence raid. Eight brides wore pink gowns and eight grooms black tuxedos as Rev. Louise Reed joined them at a makeshift altar at Malcolm X College auditorium.
Prince Charles marks his 40th birthday with a street party for 1,500 youths aided by his charities and a Buckingham Palace ball. Sacramento police seek Dorothea Puente, landlady of a Victorian boardinghouse, for investigation of multiple killings. Investigators believe seven or eight residents may be buried in the yard as digging teams work with forensic anthropologists. authorities say robbery appears to be motive. Puente, on parole for drugging elderly victims, was briefly held and later released for lack of evidence.
The Palestine National Council plans a declaration endorsing Israel's right to exist and backing Resolution 242 as the path to peace. Up to 85 percent of the 450 members are expected to approve. A separate draft calls for a provisional government to negotiate peace as a new strategy amid the West Bank and Gaza independence push.
CAPE CANAVERAL Fla A countdown simulation is under way for a classified space shuttle flight planned for late this month. Five astronauts will board Atlantis for the final two hours of rehearsal to check communications and launch procedures. A two day flight readiness review will set a firm launch date, with a target of Nov 30. Details remain scarce as Atlantis carries a Defense Department payload believed to be an intelligence gathering satellite. No launch time or mission length will be disclosed in advance, and a media blackout will occur after orbital insertion until 24 hours before landing at Edwards Air Force Base California.

Analysts say his vice presidency could retreat to traditional duties such as political events and state funerals, signaling a shift away from advisory influence.
A 25 member committee from the Department of Energy Du Pont and Westinghouse urged that computer simulators used in commercial nuclear reactor operations be required at Savannah River Plant near Aiken SRP is the sole source of plutonium and tritium for weapons. Du Pont currently operates SRP but Westinghouse will take over in spring. Westinghouse plans to supply simulators and is examining how to run an unused SRP simulator to better reflect commercial reactor operations.
