In Saint Paul a cat named Morris alerted its owner in a second story apartment above Arnie’s Liquor and Food Tavern as a fire began at 5:30 a.m. The feline’s howls woke Irene Machenhausen and neighbor Wendy Nielsen guiding them to safety. Firefighters found Morris dead in a second floor hallway.
Kevin L. Nesmith, a black Citadel cadet, resigned from the corps amid racial hazing by white cadets. The college punished but did not dismiss the perpetrators, drawing criticism from NAACP and black ministers who planned protests at Homecoming. Nesmith left campus around 5 30 p m after submitting his resignation at 5 15 p m Thursday.

Bath Mill owner United Merchants and Manufacturers hires Nycor Associates to market the 373 400 square foot Bath Mill complex as the Aiken Commerce Center. The plan aims to rent 7 500 to 49 000 square feet per tenant within three to six months and later sell the 18 5 acre site. The effort costs 50 000 to 100 000 dollars and targets manufacturing warehousing and office tenants.
