Commandant Richard Schreck and State Rep. Bill Taylor spoke at a veterans event praising service and urging employers to hire veterans. keynote speaker Robert Murphy of USC Aiken described the city as veteran friendly and a place veterans can call home.
The current continuing resolution funds SRS for a short period with no planned employee cuts or furloughs. SRS received about 25 percent of its $1.2 billion request, including $92 million for risk management, $162 million for liquid tank waste, $27 million for salt waste facility, and $35 million for safeguards. The October shutdown caused 1,400 furloughs at Savannah River remediation and 270 at Wackenhut Services. Derrek Asberry, Aiken Standard reporter.
The National Weather Service forecasts Aiken County rising to the mid 50s to 60s Thursday afternoon. Friday highs near 67 and lows around 47. Weekend expected mid 70s with overnight down to about 52. Light rain may mix with snow today from Tennessee and Kentucky to the mid Atlantic, including the southern Appalachians.
