Otis Campbell, 65, of Johnston states his life was saved because he is black after two men shot James Oscar Herrin, 53, at Herrin's Store around 10 30 in the morning. Campbell was tied with rags but spared when the attacker with the iron hammer decided not to kill him.

Three juveniles arrested in Johnston area killings

A Johnston grocer, a North Augusta couple and a Ward man were killed in separate rural shootings across Edgefield, Aiken and Saluda counties. Three juveniles are charged with armed robbery and murder of James Oscar Herrin. Willie Clarence Smith, 22, faces murder charges in Saluda County for A C Brown Jr. in Ward.
