Data recorder found in Atlantic as crash probes begin

Data recorder from the New York bound Boeing 767 is recovered from 270 feet of Atlantic depths. NTSB Chair Jim Hall notes damage to one end may affect data while the other black box, the cockpit voice recorder, remains missing. Navy and underwater robots Magnum and Deep Drone assist in the ongoing search with a lab analysis planned in Washington.

Ladybugs arrive as warm spell draws Asian beetles home

In Aiken County and much of the South, multicolored Asian lady beetles move indoors as cooler weather returns. Entomologist Dr John Bass of South Aiken High School notes the insects are beneficial in small numbers, with a seasonal last hurrah before winter hibernation.

Penland's Legacy Honored With USCA Building Namesake

On the USCA campus in Aiken a dedication honored Robert E. Penland with the Robert E. Penland Administration and Classroom Building, built in 1971. Amelia Penland spoke briefly noting her husband would be pleased with the tribute. Chancellor Robert E. Alexander credited Penland with pushing USCA’s creation and supporting its growth. Dale Losey and others recalled his honest, sincere leadership and his role in attracting gifts that shaped the campus.

Horse ordinance on track to revision in Aiken

The Aiken City Council opened discussion on a revised zoning ordinance at a regular meeting. The contentious issue of horses in residential areas was addressed quietly as the council approved the first reading of the proposed zoning changes. Planning Commissioner Lucy Knowles warned the new ordinance could signal the end of horse operations in Aiken, noting the agreement had held until a single opposing figure altered the course.

Primary race narrows to two for city council seat

Patrick Cunning and James Sutherland are the only Republican contenders for the unexpired city council seat. Both qualified before the noon Monday deadline for the December primary. Democrats did not field a candidate and no petition candidate was announced. The Dec 28 primary selects a nominee to fill the term of Robert S. Perry who resigned after election to the House. the general election is in February.

Committee weighs compact for nuclear waste in South Carolina

The Nuclear Waste Task Force leans toward rejoining a regional compact but several members seek to keep Barnwell County as the nation’s waste site. Gov Hodges wants a plan to move SC out of burial duties. Panel meets Dec 2 with final recommendation due Dec 13 for Legislature and governor.
