Ski Beech at Beech Mountain opened its slopes Tuesday amid unseasonably cold air and up to 12 inches of snow in Boone North Carolina. Spokeswoman Sherry Corbett said workers were surprised to learn the slopes would open and noted 6 to 12 inches of natural powder. By noontime she had sold 50 ski tickets.
Residents of Antelope Oregon voted 34 to 0 to restore the town name to Antelope after Rajneesh followers controlled the area. Ma Deva Parmita, council president, said the change takes effect immediately once certified. About 3,000 followers live at Rajneeshpuram nearby.
DC Comics plans a contemporary redesign for Superman ahead of his 50th anniversary in 1988 while keeping the core red and blue costume. Paul Levitz confirms the overhaul aims to refresh his history and reducing the supporting cast for a leaner era.

The Columbia budget board approved a 1987 budget of 2.76 billion dollars cutting merit and longevity pay for state employees and replacing it with performance based raises. Agencies sought 447.3 million and 4,130 new positions but only 167.8 million remained for new or expanded programs. 754 new hires are planned with 688 funded from state revenues, mostly for corrections and parole, including staff for a new prison to meet overcrowding settlement.
The University of Michigan researchers report 30 percent of 16 000 high school seniors used an illicit drug in the prior month with half using only marijuana and half using other illegal substances. Sixty one percent had tried an illicit drug, with 40 percent using a drug other than marijuana, signaling potential end to five year decline.
